All materials collected are to begin with, processed in Ireland and made ready for re-manufacturing into a range of products. The materials are then exported to various countries for recycling purposes.
Newspapers and Magazines are sent for repulping to Paper Mills across Europe and the Far East. The Majority currently goes to UPM Kymmene Group. At their mills, the material is manufactured back into newsprint. This is used by both the Irish Times and Independent Newspapers.
Mixed Cardboard also goes to Board Mills worldwide. It is used mainly for the manufacture of light board for packaging such as cereal boxes.
Aluminium and Steel are re-smelted and used again in the manufacture of Tin and Aluminium packaging. The majority currently goes to Alcan in the UK.
This leaves a 3-5% leftover waste which must be sent to landfill. This waste mainly consists of plastic bags which are used by the householder to “separate†the different materials or plastic bottles.
Collection of Tetra Pak has recently begun in some areas and it is hoped to add plastic to the collection in the not too distant future subject to identifying suitable end markets for the expected quantities.
In the Dublin Region during 2002 this is the breakdown of materials -
