Mayor Dermot Looney congratulates Arts Bursary Award Winners 2014                                  

Through its annual bursary award scheme, the Council supports the artistic and professional development of artists of all disciplines from across the county.   The recipients of the Awards for 2014 have been announced. Eight Individual Artists Bursary awards were made totalling €10,000 in the categories of music, literature, performing arts, and visual arts.    Three awards were made totalling €2,000 for the Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians.

Mayor Dermot Looney met with the award winners in County Hall to congratulate them on their achievements and he acknowledged their valuable contribution to the artistic development to the County.

The meeting provided a wonderful opportunity for all of the Artists to meet the Mayor, and for the Artists to meet each other and exchange information about their ideas and projects.

The winners for 2014 are as follows:

The Individual Artist Bursary Awards which enable career development through innovation, education, travel, and project development, have been awarded to:

  • Colm Keegan: Category Literature:   To work on 3 projects   1. 100 poems for the hundred years since 1916. 2: A short play and 3: A night time crackle – Short stories.
  • Michael J Whelan: Category Literature: For the completion and publication of his 1st collection of poetry “PEACEKEEPER”. and for writing a historical based novel titled “The allegiance of Ghosts”.
  • Jane Hackett: Category Music: She will use the money to attend master classes in Violin in Europe and the UK with five leaders in this field
  • Abigail McDonagh: Category Music To assist ongoing professional development in playing the violin.
  • Michael McCabe: Category Performing Arts He has been accepted by the prestigious SITI, a New York based Theatre Company to participate on a 4 week long physical theatre movement and dance training programme.
  • Michael Dignam: Category Visual Arts - Assistance towards a Masters degree in Fine Art in Goldsmiths University London
  • Olivia Hassett: Category Visual Arts She will use the money utilising innovative software and 3D printing technologies to produce a new body of work for display in an art, science and medical venue.
  • Nora O’Murchu: CategoryVisual Arts/Digital Arts  Towards production of GLITCH festival in Rua Red from June 18th to July 19th

The Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians which is now in its fifth year has been made possible by the generosity of the Halpin Family working together with the Arts Office, South Dublin County Council. The award is made to young musicians/composers/singers, in the county to support their musical development. Three awards have been made this year: 

  • Daniel Halpin, - Gangs Band: GANGS are a group of four teenagers from Tallaght. The money will be used to purchase a new guitar.
  • Jane Hackett: She was also an individual winner and will use the money to attend master classes.
  • Nicholas Cooper: To create a band to plan and record the music he has been writing over the last few years.
