Christmas Decoration Competition from Recycled Materials

On 17th December 2013, the Mayor Dermot Looney presented the winners of the Christmas Decoration Competition with their prizes in the County Hall. Young people made wonderful Christmas decorations from recycled household material. The Mayor, Dermot Looney, said “I am delighted with the entries this year and the inventiveness of young people. These young artists show great creativity and ingenuity. Handmade decorations are so precious. These decorations will be brought out every year and will hold great memories for all the family as the children grow. It is clear that young people are very creative using ordinary household recyclable materials.. I congratulate everyone in their great efforts. You have produced a lovely Christmas work of art and have helped the environment as well”..

The winners are

The Mayor congratulated St Josephs Special School and St Colmcille’s SNS on their excellent contribution to the competition. Both these schools were highly commended by the Mayor. This Christmas South Dublin Count Council is asking everyone to think about the environment. Every year each household generates a lot of extra packaging waste over the Christmas period. The Mayor encourages all citizens to reduce and recycle their festive packaging.

Over the Christmas period, Ireland will use about roughly 32 million batteries, about 40% of all batteries sold in Ireland every year. If everyone returned their batteries to the Civic Amenity or to the retailer when purchasing new ones, millions of batteries would be diverted from Ireland’s landfill. That’s a good start to a New Year.
