A FREE outdoor spectacle based on the carol ’12 Days of Christmas’ to celebrate the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Tallaght by the Mayor of South Dublin County to mark the beginning of the festive season.
7th December 2013 at 3:45pm
County Library, Tallaght and Chamber Square.
The Event:
- Youth, school, disability and community arts, performance and music groups will bring to life each of the 12 days of Christmas through song, dance, lanterns and costumes
- Each day will have its own performance moment in the midst of a parade of characters and animals from the song.
- Visual artists Jackie Gray and Tadashi Kato have designed an array of colourful and exotic costumes, hats and lanterns most of which will be made using recycled materials.
- The presentation of the song ‘The 12 days Christmas’ will be a musical feast of rap, hip hop, traditional Irish, band and brass music composed by musicians Gerry Horan with support from Aoife Desmond, Martin Moran and Michael Fleming in collaboration with local music groups .

UNWRAPPED is an annual winter celebration.
Children, young people, and communities of all ages join professional artists to ‘unwrap’ the festive winter season through a combination of music, performance and visual arts.
For UNWRAPPED 2013, over 250 children, young people and adults from South Dublin County’s youth, school, disability and community arts, performance and music groups will bring the song ’12 Days of Christmas’ to life through dance, colourful lanterns and costumes.
The presentation will be a musical feast of rap, hip hop, rock, traditional Irish, band and brass music, developed by musicians Gerry Horan, Martin Moran and Michael Fleming in collaboration with music groups from throughout the County. Dancer and Choreographer Ríonach Ní Néill is the event’s choreographic advisor. UNWRAPPED is produced by Victoria Durrer with Tony Fegan, Director of Tallaght Community Arts as Creative Director.

The event begins with the Children’s Book Awards in County Library at 3:45pm and will move outdoors for the performance. Audio Description is available for those with visual impairment.

UNWRAPPED has been taking place since 2010 through a creative partnership between South Dublin County Council Arts Office and Corporate Services Department; South Dublin Libraries; Tallaght Community Arts; Alternative Entertainment; Contact Studio; Civic Theatre, Tallaght; RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre and South Dublin County Music Education Partnership.

Artists Involved:
Tadashi Katois a Wicklow based visual artist and designer who works in costume and 3D construction with young people and adults. He trained at Setsu Mode Seminar: Fashion Illustration Arts School.Tokyo Japan between 1986 -1989. He worked as a designer facilitator for LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) on a number of site specific projects including Wayan Gulat Balinese Gamelan artists and the French pyrotechnique company Group F. He has worked with Helen Hugel of Helium Theatre Company, Tallaght Youth Theatre, Tallaght Community Arts and The Source Summer School in Thurles.Tadashi designed and made the illuminated cloaks for Unwrapped 2011. In June 2012 he designed and made kamishibai (Japanese paper theatre) for Message In A Bottle an international youth arts exchange project in June 2012.He is currently designer for The Haunted – Halloween Parades in Clondalkin and Tallaght 2012. He is working in association with Monkeyshine Theatre for Unwrapped 2012.
Jackie Gray is a mixed media artist living and working in Dublin. Her work is concerned with snapshots of the real world and its transient habits. Using sound, video, sculpture and drawing, Gray’s work deliberates on the ambiguous divide between the observed and the imagined. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Visual Art Practice, IADT in 2009.Recent exhibitions; WBMilbank Gallery, New Zealand, 2010, 2011, Ormond Studios 2010, 2011, Wicklow Garden Festival, 2011, OPW, St Enda’s Park, South Dublin, 2011. Curation; Susan Walsh,A Progression of Light, Ormond Studios, The Drawing Project, Dun Laoghaire 2012.
Ríonach Ní Néill is the Artistic Director and founder of Ciotóg, a dance ensemble whose work is inspired by an engagement with human and social issues. Ciotóg is currently dance ensemble in residence for South Dublin County. Their work involves collaborations with composers, filmographers, architects, actors, writers, visual artists, professional dancers and first-time artists, rural, suburban and urban dwellers. They have been performed by six to 84 year olds, and been invited to festivals and venues throughout Ireland and in the US and Europe.
Gerry Horan runs Contact Studio, a community focused recording studio initiated by South Dublin County Council and based in RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre. He has composed music for a number of film and TV programmes, including The Liberities by Areaman Productions. He works within South Dublin County developing music opportunities for young people.
