National Accessibility Week 2013 – Celebrating Accessible South Dublin County

On Monday, 2 December 2013 Mayor Dermot Looney will officially launch National Accessibility Week in South Dublin County in Tallaght Stadium

Local Authority National Accessibility Week 2013 starts Monday, 2 December and will run until the 9th December. This Week is an important annual opportunity for local authorities to encourage everyone to focus on issues of accessibility for disabled people. Councils, businesses and community groups across the country are using the Week to highlight the accessibility of their facilities and services; and to encourage wider society to also be more inclusive of the varied access needs of disabled people. The week is an initiative of the Local Authority Access Officer Network and the LGMA National Disability Steering Committee.

South Dublin County Council will be promoting accessibility in various ways throughout the Week and we are delighted to start the week with a seminar focussing on the Business Case for Accessibility. This seminar will be opened by Mayor Dermot Looney. The key note address will be delivered by Dr. Gerald Craddock, Chief Executive of the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design. Presentations will also be made by Mr. Peter Byrne, Chief Executive, South Dublin Chamber and Mr. Jack Martin, Director of Retail, The Square Town Centre. The core aim of the “Business Case for Accessibility” seminar is to encourage businesses and services to look at providing access not as an unwelcome cost, but as an investment that is likely to boost their revenue through increased custom from disabled people, their families, friends, colleagues, assistants and so on. This seminar will be held in Tallaght Stadium and registration starts at 9.30 am.

An extensive programme of events has been developed across the County for National Accessibility Week (available for download from http://www.sdcc.ie/the-council/policies-and-plans/disability-access. Events include the Signs of Life Exhibition in the County Library from the 2nd to the 9th December and the Fishing for All event in Corkagh Park Fishery on Friday the 6th December.
