MindMindR – a new approach to Mental Health Information
The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr. Cathal King was present in County Hall, Tallaght today to officially launch the new ‘MindMindR’ Smartphone Application. MindmindR is an initiative spearheaded by the Mayor and developed by South Dublin County Council in partnership with Comhairle Na Nóg, South Dublin County’s Youth Council.
The origins of the idea for the App were from the Mayor’s own personal experiences of knowing people with mental health issues and the difficulties they experienced. The Mayor was anxious to remove that initial stigma around asking for help and highlighted this need as part of his Mayor’s initiative and called on South Dublin County Council to develop an App and a QR code that would quickly and easily link people to information on the local services available.
MindMindR is the first Mental Health Services Directory for South Dublin County. Throughout his term of office the Mayor promoted mental health wellbeing by supporting initiatives that enabled citizens and in particular young people to cope positively with the demands of modern life. With this in mind the MindMindR App was developed to provide a comprehensive directory of Mental Health services and resources for South Dublin County.
Using the latest smartphone technology, the MindMindR App will enable users to quickly gain access to information on a range of mental health services available in their local area, concentrating mainly on the Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Rathfarnham Areas. There is information on bereavement services, crisis pregnancy, suicide prevention and addiction services – to name but a few with access to a wealth of other services that people of all ages can locate easily using the GPS function of their Smartphone. There are also emergency contacts and details for national services. Local services within the South Dublin County boundaries are mapped to enable the user to navigate to the address of the service they require. Accessibility information has also been added where available and will be further updated going forward.
Speaking at the launch Mayor Kind said “Mental Health and wellbeing is a growing issue that affects the citizens of this County. I believe we all have a role to play in raising public awareness about mental health issues, to help remove the stigma around mental health and to promote open discussion on the much needed investment in prevention, promotion and treatment services for those experiencing mental health difficulties. If you need to talk to somebody or seek help, you can now download this App to your Smartphone. In your hand you have access to addresses, telephone help lines or websites that can provide you with vital help and informationâ€.
Mayor King concluded the launch by asking people to promote the App on their websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts.
