Mayor Cathal King will formally launch South Dublin County Council’s National Bike Week Programme on Sunday 16th June with a 4-6 km heritage cycle from St Edna’s Park to Rathfarnham Castle at 12pm. National Bike Week is a week long initiative promoted by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport as part of the “Smarter Travel Initiative” to get us all up and cycling.

The theme for Bike Week 2013 is Cycling for Fun and as such we have incorporated events for all categories and cycling abilities. People of working age, families, school going children, single people and those interested in their local heritage. Through out the week there is something for everyone - promotions, cycling events, family cycling in parks, a Tour De Cuisine and Tour de Romance in Lucan taking in the Grand Canal Green Route and safety training in primary schools scheduled to take place all around the County.

South Dublin County Council is actively planning for and developing the County’s walking and cycle network by constructing a number of local walking and cycling routes to service local communities throughout the county. These local links will create more sustainable neighbourhoods with direct pedestrian and cyclist links to popular local destinations. The aim is to encourage people to leave the car at home for short trips by bringing more households within easy walking and cycling distances of local amenities. In many cases the proposed links are based on existing short cuts. The upgrades of these routes will enable cyclists and pedestrians, including those with decreased mobility to access safe, direct, hard surfaced routes to the local shops, schools, community centre bus, rail or LUAS stops, cycle routes or the parks / playgrounds.

Mayor King said that ‘Bike Week is all about promotion of cycling as a healthy and fun activity for all, cycling keeps us fit and healthy in addition to keeping our urban areas clean quiet and decongested. There are lots of events to choose from and there is something for everyone of all ages and abilities.

The closing ceremony for Bike Week is the ‘Pedal in the Park, in Tymon Park on Sunday 23rd from 12.00 to 3pm. This a family event aimed at encouraging everyone to come out and enjoy this fantastic amenity we have in South Dublin County. There will be Balloon modelling and face painting and Sprocket Rocket for the children with music on the day provided by the wonderful Tallaght Youth Band.

If you are interested in attending the ‘Pedal in Park’ Tour De Cuisine or Tour de Romance or any of the events planned for National Bike Week in South Dublin County, check out the Council Website www.sdcc.ie or www.bikeweek.ie for more details.
