Mayor Cathal King congratulates Arts Bursary Award Winners 2013

South Dublin County Council supports talented young artists of all disciplines from across the county through its annual bursary award scheme. The recipients of the Awards for 2013 have been announced. Eleven awards were been made totalling €13,000 in the categories of music, literature, performing arts, film and visual arts.

Mayor Cathal King met with the award winners in County Hall to congratulate them on their achievements and he acknowledged the award winners valuable contribution to the artistic development to the County. Orla Scannell, Arts Officer, spoke about the history of the Bursary Awards which were established in 2000. Over 100 awards have been made to the arts community over the past thirteen years which indicates the high standard and diversity of artistic practice in the county.

The meeting provided a wonderful opportunity for all of the Artists to meet the Mayor, and for the Artists to meet each other and exchange information about their ideas and projects.

There are four categories of awards and the winners for 2013 are as follows:

The individual Artist Bursary Awardswhich enable career development through innovation, education, travel, and project development, have been awarded to:

  • Molly Dwyer, €1,500 - Visual Arts: To complete a visual arts residency and exhibition, Room with a View at Rua Red.
  • David Fagan, €2,000 - Visual Arts: To produce his first solo exhibition, Everything, Everywhere, All the Time.
  • Jessica Kennedy, €2,000 - Dance: To research and create a drive-in dance, Songs from a Car Park, in the Square car park.
  • Daniel Figgis,€1000 - Music: To access rehearsal and recording facilities for new computerised interactive drum work called Trigger.
  • Karl Whitney,€1,500 - Literature: To fund the writing of a non fiction book entitled Broken City; Adventures in Dublin.
  • Phoebe White, €1,000 - Music: To attend master classes in violin.
  • Brian Kirk, €1000 - Literature: To create and edit a collection of poetry for submission to publishers.

The Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians which is now in its fourth year has been made possible by the generosity of the Halpin Family working together with South Dublin County Council. The award is made to young musicians/composers/singers, in the county to support their musical development. Three awards have been made this year:

  • Sinead Finnegan: €1000 - To fund the completion of three movement work for piano trio based on diverse literary themes.
  • Abigail Mc Donagh: €500 - To attend master classes for Classical violin.
  • Killian White: €500 - To attend master classes in cello

Young Artists Development Awardis designed to support the practice and/or career development of young artists aged 18 – 25. One award has been made this year to :-

  • Brian Gregory, : €1000- Film - Towards creating a short film on the theme of domestic violence using contemporary dance
