The Chinese New Year celebrations in South Dublin County were officially opened by Mayor Cathal King on Monday 11th February at County Library with a great evening of entertainment for all ages. The event was a collaboration between South Dublin County Council, Institute of Technology Tallaght and County Library. The Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar and celebrated by Chinese communities across the world. According to the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of the Water Snake, andall things will be possible.
The programme of events included:
· Chinese Cookery Demonstration – “A taste of Chinaâ€
· Arts and Crafts Workshops
· Traditional Chinese /Irish Music and Dance performances
· A stunning display of the Lion Dance performed by the Chinese / Irish Cultural Academy
Students from Nanching University who are currently attending the Institute of Technology, shared their experiences of living and studying in Tallaght and gave an insight into Chinese Culture. In recent years, the Chinese New Year festivities are spreading beyond local Chinese communities and events like this help to promote the ever growing interest in China and foster cultural, educational and economic exchanges between Ireland and China, with the aim of attracting more tourism and business in particular to South Dublin County.
