South Dublin County Council has been named as ‘Council of the Year 2013’ at the Annual Local Authority Members Association Awards, held on Saturday 26th January.
The Mayor, Cllr. Cathal King said “I am honoured and delighted to accept the ‘Council of the Year’ award for South Dublin County Council for the second time in three years. On behalf of the elected members, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the County Manager, Philomena Poole and the staff of the Council, who despite these challenging economic times have been rewarded at national level for their commitment to public service improvement and efficiencies. County Manager Philomena Poole added “This award is a tribute to the partnership of the elected members and staff in their dedication to the delivery of a wide range of quality services and facilities throughout South Dublin County for the business and local communityâ€.
Mayor King gave a special mention to the staff of South Dublin Library Services for also winning the Local Educational Initiative of the Year Award for ‘Ready2Read’. Cllr. King said “this innovative project involves hands-on training for parents to help their children develop six pre-literacy skills which prepare them for formal learning in school and which also underpins their journey to becoming independent readers. Literacy is a vital life-skill and a predictor of success or difficulties in life for the individual. The Ready2Read project seeks to leverage the interest and good will of parents to help their children acquire early literacy skills through family learningâ€.
Cllr. King concluded by acknowledging Joe Byrne from Lucan who won the prestigious Community Volunteer of the Year Award; “I think it is very important to recognise those inspirational individuals who volunteer their time, effort and expertise for the benefit others and in particular Joe’s contribution to his local community in Lucanâ€.
In addition to the ‘Council of the Year’ award, 17 projects nominated by South Dublin County Council were shortlisted, with the Council scooping the top awards in the following categories:
Local Educational Initiative of the Year – Ready2Read, South Dublin Library Services
Community Volunteer of the Year – Joe Byrne, Lucan
