Local Authority National Accessibility Week 2012 starts today Monday the 3rd December by celebrating the annual International Day of Disabled Persons. National Accessibility Week is an important annual opportunity for local authorities to encourage all people to focus on issues of accessibility for disabled people. Therefore Councils, businesses and community groups across the country are using the Week to highlight the accessibility of their facilities and services; and to encourage wider society to also be more inclusive of the varied access needs of disabled people. The week is an initiative of the Local Authority Access Officer Network and the LGMA National Disability Steering Committee.
South Dublin County Council will be promoting the accessibility in various ways throughout the Week and we are delighted to start the week by announcing South Dublin Libraries new Disability Studies Catalogue and online resource. South Dublin Libraries aim to promote and provide accessible services to all library users. We are aware that providing access to disabled people must go much further than merely providing ramps, Braille, Loops and providing information in a variety of formats. Therefore we are delighted to announce our new Disability Studies catalogue and online resource list. Our aim is to share information about disability that is not impairment specific or focused on medical issues and to share rights based writing, from disabled and non-disabled academics and activists who work within a social policy rights-based mindset. During National Accessibility Week the new ‘Accessible South Dublin County’ information leaflets (available for download from http://accessible.southdublin.ie) will also be distributed across the County.
