Casualty Reduction Strategy: Tuesday 30th October in the IT Tallaght Campus from 11 am to 2 pm

As Part of South Dublin County Council’s participation in and support of the Garda Siochana Casualty Reduction Strategy pedestrians and cyclists in IT Tallaght will get the chance to see the road from the view point of a HGV driver. This important safety initiative will take place on Tuesday 30th October in the IT Campus from 11 am to 2 pm. The Road Safety Authority who are supporting the event have arranged to have their ‘Roll Over Car’ (simulator) available.

The Casualty Reduction Strategy , a National Garda Siochana campaign will be running from 1st October to 30th November and is being supported in Dublin by the four local authorities (Dublin City Council, South Dublin, Fingal and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Councils), the Road Safety Authority, National Transport Authority, Railway Procurement Agency, Luas and Dublin Bus. Paul Toner of Toner Transport and Logistics Haulage company will provide the HGV cab on the day. The Gardai and the supporting organisations will also distribute high visibility clothing and LED Bicycle Lights to illustrate the difference it makes to the wearer’s visibility on the road.

Garda Derek Cloughley of the Garda Road Safety Unit says: “Walking and cycling are safe activities but seeing the road from the perspectives of other road users gives you a better understanding of the dangers that are out there and ultimately a better chance to avoid them. The initiative will give pedestrians and cyclists the rare chance to get into a HGV cab and see what the driver can and can’t see. They’ll notice the blind spot to the front and side of the truck that many people fail to take account of. Garda cyclists will help illustrate this potential danger, which people should be particularly aware of especially when the truck is turning to the left.In 20116 of the 11 fatalities were pedestrians alone and in 2012 to date there have been 10 fatalities, 2 up on last years comparative figure”

In addition to this initiative South Dublin County Council has deployed 5 VMS signs throughout the Countyto highlight the campaign and raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and to promote safe driving. The signs have been in place since 22nd October 2012 and will remain in situ for 4 weeks. The signs will be moved to new locations every week to ensure that the maximum impact is achieved.
