PRESS RELEASE ISSUED 9th FEBRUARY 09
June date for Local Elections
The next Local Elections for membership of South Dublin County Council will be held on Friday 5th June 2009. The announcement was made today by Mr. John Gormley, TD, Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government and South Dublin County Council will be making every effort to ensure that eligible electors are registered to vote on 5th June.
Ms. Teresa Walsh, South Dublin County Councils Director of Corporate and Libraries says the Council has just published the 2009/2010 Register of Electors. This Register will be used for the taking of all polls and referenda between 15th February 2009 and 14th February 2010. As electors must be registered in order to vote at the June elections everyone should check the new register to see if they are registered, remarked Ms Walsh as the Council prepared to circulate copies of the register to various public offices, libraries, post offices and garda stations for public viewing. According to Ms. Walsh electors may also check the register on line at www.checktheregister.ie.
If you find that you were eligible for but not included in the 2009/2010 Register of Electors you still have a second chance to register before the June elections. People can apply for entry in the Supplement to the Register of Electors. To be included in the supplement and able to vote at the elections, a person must be 18 years of age or over, be ordinarily resident at the address at which they wish to be registered and not already registered as an elector at any other address.
Application forms for entry in the supplement will be available from Co Hall, Tallaght, Clondalkin Civic Offices, Council libraries and garda stations as well as downloaded from www.checktheregister.ie. Forms must bewitnessed by a member of An Garda Sochana or, in exceptional circumstances where a person cannot attend their local Garda Station because of a physical illness or disability, by a Council official.
Completed applications must be made to South Dublin County Council to be received by the Council not later than Monday 18th May 2009.
