As part of Social Inclusion Week, starting Monday 24th November, Flavours of Home, a cookbook with family recipes/family memories will be launched by Mayor Marie Corr on Tuesday 25th November in the Council Chamber, South Dublin County Council Headquarters, Tallaght. The publication celebrates 2008, the Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The initiative, which also included a number of high profile multicultural workshops in Tallaght, Lucan and Clondalkin, was structured and supported by The Social Inclusion Unit, South Dublin County Council. The chief aims were to break down barriers between race, culture and gender and to provide a space where integration could flourish. Most of all, the structure of the workshops was geared towards enjoyment. Each story was generously shared. It soon became clear that although there are indeed different cultures, with their own rituals and traditions, the global family at its very core, has much in common.
The workshops were a real pleasure. Friendships were made, insights exchanged but above all, the importance of family life from a local and global perspective was highlighted through the power of story. At its very core, society, no matter how diverse culturally, has a shared narrative. As a result, doors were opened in hearts, minds and spirits.
The cover artwork for Flavours of Home was obtained through open competition throughout various primary schools in South Dublin County. The Winner, Rhyla Mae Santiago (aged 9), is a pupil of Archbishop Ryan Senior National School, Balgaddy Road, Lucan. The children who participated in the art competition for the design of the cover for the book will be presented with their prizes.
