YOUNG PEOPLE FROM KNOCKMITTEN MAKE WAVES ON LOCAL RADIO STATION

Throughout the autumn, Liffey Sound Radio 96.4 FM has been working with a group of young people from Knockmitten, known as KMMG Crew. KMMG Crew is a multi-media group from Clondalkin Youth Service that meets in Knockmitten every week.

Liffey Sound Radio staff helped members of the KMMG Crew learn skills in radio broadcasting, such as interviewing techniques, working with sound equipment, and how to put on a live programme. The group recorded and then broadcasted four programmes focused on the NOISE 08 Concert: Battle of the Bands, a competition for ages 15 to 25 held in the Civic Theatre in October 2008.
The KMMG Crew interviewed participants in the concert about their own music, their impressions of South Dublin Countys rock music scene and their feelings about participating in the NOISE Battle of the Bands. KMMG Crew was also recording interviews and reactions from the audience on the night of the final bands competition, October 28th. At the close of the programme, the KMMG Crew was invited to give a live broadcast on 96.4 FM.
Members of KMMG Crew described the experience as a once in a lifetime chance. Liffey Sound has invited them back to do monthly radio programmes on a topic of their choosing. The group is currently considering the invitation and some issues they might cover, particularly those that focus on young people in the community of Knockmitten.
The project was funded by Liffey Sound Community Radio Station and the Arts Office at South Dublin County Council. Broadcasts can be heard on NOISE South Dublin, a website funded by South Dublin County Council for creative young people in the County ages 13 to 25.
