Leo Swan Memorial Lecture

and the launch of Sean Bagnalls Tallaght 1835-1850 A Rural Place, published by Four Courts Press

The 7th Annual Leo Swan Memorial Lecture will take place at The County Library in Tallaght on Wednesday 22nd October 2008 at 8.00 pm. Mayor Marie Corr of South Dublin County will introduce the lecture.

Leo Swan who died in 2001 is fondly remembered in the Tallaght area as an encouraging teacher and former Principal of Our Lady of Loreto Primary School. He was also a founder member of Tallaght Historical Society. While teaching he was involved in archaeological investigations and in lecturing on archaeology. He was a pioneer of archaeological investigation using aerial photography.

In the early 1990s he gave up teaching to concentrate fulltime on archaeology. He led the archaeological excavation at Templeogue House where he discovered early Irish glass.

This years lecture will be given by Sean Bagnall, a native of Tallaght, and is entitled From Deserted to Vagrancy The Pre-Famine Poor of Tallaght.

The lecture will be preceded by the launch of Seans new book , Tallaght 1835-1850 A Rural Place which is published by Four Courts Press. The book will be launched by Mayor Marie Corr. Copies of the book will be on sale in the library on the night.
