Press Release 3rd October 2008

OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN DOUBLES ITS PROGRAMME FOR 2008

The Irish Architecture Foundation today announced the programme for the third annual OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN weekend (Thursday 16 October to Sunday 19 October 2008), featuring close to 140 buildings and events - almost twice as many as last year - as the event stretches beyond the city boundaries to Fingal, Ballymun, Dn Laoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin. The full programme is available at www.architecturefoundation.ie today and event bookings open on Monday October 6.

Some of the major additions to this years programme include stunning architect-designed private residences in Howth, Killester and Ballsbridge; contemporary apartment buildings such as the elegant Alto Vetro glass tower in the Dublin Docklands; and state-of-the-art corporate headquarters, for example the landmark Irish Times building and the spectacular circular glass offices for the Commissioners of Irish Lights in Dn Laoghaire. Buildings have been selected from across the spectrum, ranging from award-winning residences for senior citizens in Kilmainham and Elm Park to a new primary school on Cork Street. The latest cultural institutions such as the magical Light House Cinema in Smithfield are juxtaposed with some of Dublins best historic buildings including the recently renovated Provosts House Stables at Trinity College. Quality architecture can have a huge impact on quality of life and Open House allows people to directly experience some of the best buildings that Ireland has produced over the decades ranging from the iconic Dublin Airport Terminal, completed in 1940, to many new landmarks such as the beautifully crafted Department of Finance Offices on Merrion Row and the award-winning Brookfield Community and Youth Centre in Tallaght.

A major new event in this years programme is OPEN DEBATE a public debate on Has Dublin changed for the better? which takes place on Thursday 16 October in Liberty Hall. Other new aspects of Open House Dublin 2008 include OPEN SPACE, an extended programme of walking tours; CHILDRENS OPEN HOUSE and CULTURSTRUCTION, a visual arts strand, where four artists have been asked to create site-specific installations / performances to respond to the citys architecture.

All events are free of charge, and only a small proportion will require pre-booking.

Full programme available at www.architecturefoundation.ie and at the Temple Bar Information Centre from October 6.

Open House event bookings open on Monday October 6.

Open House Dublin is presented by the Irish Architecture Foundation under the directorship of Nathalie Weadick. Programme content has been devised by Dr. Sandra Andrea OConnell, editor of Architecture Ireland. Dublin City Council is joined this year by Ballymun Regeneration Ltd and the County Councils of Fingal, Dn Laoghaire-Rathdown and South County Dublin as major event partners.
