10 Year Anniversary of Irish National Baseball Facility Celebrated

Baseball Ireland recently celebrated its 10th year anniversary at the Irish National Baseball facility in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, West Dublin. The weekend itself was a great success. There were between 400-500 people in attendance and it was an honour to have Deputy Mayor Councillor Gus O'Connell of South Dublin County Council attend as well as the President of European Baseball Martin Miller and the Deputy Chief of Mission Robert Faucher from the US embassy. The whole event was in honour of Peter O'Malley and his incredibly generous contribution to Irish baseball. He would have been extremely happy to have witnessed the hundreds of children playing baseball on Ireland's Fields of Dreams.

Ultimately, Baseball Ireland has a vision of giving every child on the island of Ireland the opportunity to play baseball and this event gave a significant number of children the chance to experience the game for the first time. They may not all play the game for the rest of their lives or make a professional career out of it, but for a few hours, they enjoyed the most graceful of all field sports.

During the weekend, various dignitaries from the Irish-American community observed the 10 Year Anniversary of the founding of the Irish National Baseball Facility with an Opening Pitch ceremony followed by a reception.

The creation of the Irish National Baseball Facility was supported by an initial gift from prominent Irish-American Peter OMalley, the former owner and president of the Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball organisation. The facility incorporates a regulation sized adult field, an international standard Little League field and is the centrepiece of baseball activity in Ireland today.
