Rescue of Ingrid Betancourt

Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian politician, former senator and anti-corruption activist was rescued along with 14 other hostages by Columbian soldiers on Wednesday 2nd. July 2008 following six years in captivity.

Ingrid was kidnapped by the FARC Guerrilla Group on February 23rd. 2002 while campaigning for the Presidency. Her kidnapping received wide coverage in many parts of the world including Ireland.

Ingrid was awarded the Honorary Freedom of South Dublin County by the members of South Dublin County Council on 10th. November 2003 in recognition of her contribution as a politician, peacemaker and citizen and in support of her fight for freedom against oppression.

South Dublin County Council offers its congratulations to Ingrid and her fellow hostages on their release and wishes her well for the future.
