District Centre will act as the centrepiece for Adamstown
Phase 1 of the Adamstown District Centre was lodged on the 29th of January 2008. Phase 1 of the District Centre, which proposes to provide the majority of the community, residential, retail and commercial space within the District Centre will act as the centerpiece for Adamstown as a district, and has been designed by a number of design firms to create vibrant streets and spaces, through the creation of unique placemaking buildings and a mixture of differing uses.
The district centre is located adjacent to the train station, and has been designed to prioritise pedestrian and cyclist movement. In addition, throughout the development of Adamstown, the creation of safe and direct pedestrian and cyclist routes to the District Centre from all areas of Adamstown has been a high priority. This will allow for reduced car movements into the centre for Adamstown Residents.
All of the District Centre is within a 400m walkband of Adamstown Train Station. In addition, public bus services will utilise a public transport access street within the District Centre.
Community facilities proposed within Phase 1 of the District Centre include, a large public library, a public/private health centre, a religious centre designed to be shared by a number of faiths and a youth cafe. In addition, Phase 1 of the District Centre also proposes a large supermarket, a department store, a significant number of small to medium sized shops to accommodate Adamstown's day to day shopping needs, a number of cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs, a multi-screen cinema, a creche and office spaces of varying sizes.
Phase 1 also proposes the development of 606 no. residential units comprising of 1-3 bedroomed apartments and duplexes. Residential units are generally located above the ground floor commercial and retail units, and have been designed to overlook central private courtyards, while also allowing for some overlooking of the local streets of the District Centre.
The District Centre has been designed by a number of different architectural and landscape architectural firms under the guidance of a urban design masterplan. Each firm has proposed different and individual buildings, which work together with the urban design masterplan to interact and create streets and squares or spaces. The ground floor of the buildings provide for residential access, shops, commercial units, offices and other mixed uses to allow for the development of a proper functioning centre for Adamstown. In addition, each building has utilised varied materials and building heights in order to create visually interesting public streets and above ground floor private spaces. A number of public spaces are provided within the street structure, including a central or civic square which fronts onto the public library and will allow for markets or event to take place.
The majority of the District Centre will be constructed over a large semi-basement car park, accommodating the park & ride, resident car parking, and commercial parking spaces.
