Killinarden received the overall winner in their category in the Pride of Place competition.
Killinarden Community Council was the overall winner in the population category (5000+) in the all island Pride of Place competition. The prize was presented by Minister Tony Killeen and Minister Margaret Richie of the Northern Ireland Assembly in the presence of Cllr Declan Dever, Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council and Cllr. Seamus Weir, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council on Saturday 10th November in Westport.
On the day the judges came, Killinarden demonstrated the wide range of activities, course and services that are available in the community Youth Clubs, Drop in Centre, Training including computer courses, Internet Caf, Sports Clubs, Resident association Clean ups, Family Resource Centre and CARP Community Addiction Response Programme.
Hilda Hamilton and Patricia Byrne accepted the award on behalf of Killinarden Community Council This is a great honour for Killinarden and we are delighted to accept this award for all the groups and individuals who work to make Killinarden a special place said Hilda Hamilton.
Now in its fifth year, the Pride of Place Competition recognises and celebrates the vital contributions that community groups make to society. The focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their local area. This competition differs from other similar projects in that it acknowledges the involvement of the local community in all aspects of rural and urban life including regeneration projects, promoting social inclusion and cohesion, the promotion of heritage and environmental awareness. Nominations are made by Local Authorities, who see at first hand what is being carried out at local level.
In 2007 there were four entries from South Dublin County
