Social Inclusion Awareness Week 19th November 2007 23rd November 2007
Mayor Billy Gogarty in the presence of Minister for Integration Conor Lenihan TD will officially launch South Dublin County Social Inclusion Awareness Week on Monday 19th November 2007 at 12.00 pm in South Dublin County Council Headquarters.
The aim of this week is to highlight the positive work carried out by South Dublin County Council and other agencies to reduce social exclusion and poverty and to promote an understanding of social inclusion and diversity in the County.
Social Inclusion is the process which ensures that those at risk of poverty and social exclusion gain the opportunities and resources necessary to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live (Joint Report by the Commission and the Council on Social Inclusion, Office for Official Publications of the European Union). South Dublin County Council plays a key role in the direct delivery of social inclusion actions, programmes and supports to the communities.
South Dublin County Social Inclusion Awareness Week has been developed and co-ordinated by the South Dublin County Social Inclusion Network with the support of South Dublin County Councils Social Inclusion Unit. The core membership of the Network includes South Dublin County Council, Health Services Executive, Clondalkin Partnership, Tallaght Partnership, FS, the South Dublin County Childcare Committee, Disability Federation of Ireland and the South Dublin County Community Platform.
During the week there will be a number of events including an exhibition of photographs portraying A Day in the Life of a Traveller in the concourse of South Dublin County Council, A Traditional Irish Multi-Cultural Evening in Ars an Chronin, Clondalkin, Focus Group Discussion on Integration in Tallaght, staging of Michael Collins play Its a cultural thing. or is it? (A Traveller in Progress)in the Civic Theatre Tallaght, Tea Dance in Red Cow Inn Clondalkin and presentation of prizes to young people who participated in the Social Inclusion Postcard Competition and much more.
Various training courses will be available to South Dublin County Council staff over the week including Poverty Awareness and Living and Working in a Diverse Ireland.
