Celebrating the Reader
South Dublin County Council
Libraries & Arts
Plaza Hotel, Tallaght
November 10th 2007 9.30am 4.30pm
South Dublin County Libraries in association with South Dublin County Arts Office will hold its 6th annual Readers Day on Saturday November 10th 2007
This years line-up promises to be yet another great day. Speakers include Carlo Gebler, Pauline McLynn, Deirdre Purcell, Paddy Doyle, Bernard Farrell and Catherine Dunne. Poet Elizabeth Walsh Peavoy, daughter of Mary Lavin, will recall her mothers life in Meath and Dublin and will talk about what it was like to grow up with such an extraordinary presence.
The concept of Readers Day arose from the relatively recent resurgence of Reading Groups and Book Clubs. South Dublin County libraries have been unique in setting up reading groups in each of its branches which have proved very popular. The aim of Readers Day is to promote and celebrate the reader who is often seen as something abstract in the literary world.
Dermot Bolger, former Writer in Residence with South Dublin County Council and currently a resident artist in the In Context 3 (percent for Art Programme) has once again facilitated the event and will act as MC for the day.
This event will provide a vital link between authors and those who read their books and will provide confirmation that their work has meaning for people they dont actually know.
The core audience will comprise members of the book clubs held at the five branches of our library network as well as members of the public. The event will be launched by Mayor Billy Gogarty of South Dublin County Council at 10am.
