Walking is a fun way for people to get fit, and to stay fit, as part of a healthier lifestyle. That was the message being conveyed by the Irish Heart Foundation at the launch of the new Sl na Slinte routes in Glenaulin Park and California Hills Park on Friday, May 4th 2007.
Developed by the Irish Heart Foundation, South Dublin County Council and Dublin City Council, the colour-coded park Sl na Slinte routes (Path to Health) are the ideal way to make walking for leisure and good health even more enjoyable.
Marked by colourful posts which are not numbered and which are situated at 1km intervals, walkers simply follow the colour coded Km signs, setting their own pace as they go. There are three, colour coded routes of varying lengths in both parks.
Glenaulin RED Sl 1.2km
Glenaulin BLUE Sl 1km
California Hills YELLOW Sl 1.7km
With physical inactivity being one of the main risk factors for heart disease, using a Sl na Slinte walking route is an excellent way to accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity, on most days of the week.
The routes were launched by both the Lord Mayor Dublin and the Mayor of South Dublin County Council.
Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Vincent Jackson said The Sl routes in both parks are a wonderful way of encouraging people of all ages to get out and get active. The project is an excellent example of how both councils can work together to create a fantastic amenity for people in such a large community.
Mayor of South Dublin County Council Eamonn Maloney said We were delighted to work with the Irish Heart Foundation and South Dublin County Council on this project, the Sl routes are a great addition to the community and a wonderful amenity for the people of the area.
Tanya Comber-Rait, National Coordinator of Sl na Slinte at the Irish Heart Foundation said, We are delighted to open the new Sli na Slainte routes in the parks. It is important that adults engage in 30 minutes of physical activity, preferably on a daily basis, as part of a healthy lifestyle. Walking is an ideal way to do just that. It keeps your heart strong, improves muscle strength and makes you feel good. But above all walking is fun. So our message to everyone now isLets Go Walking.
