EcoWeek 2016, 18th – 22nd April
Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Sarah Holland launched the 12th annual Eco Week in the County Library, Tallaght on 18th April 2015.
EcoWeek, which runs from the 18th – 22nd April, is part of a larger annual calendar of environmental awareness events provided by South Dublin County Council including but not limited to the green schools programme, the Social Credits Scheme, National Spring Clean, the National Gum Litter Campaign, as well as Halloween and Christmas campaigns.
EcoWeek goes from strength to strength each year. It promotes awareness of the environment and is a fantastic opportunity for schools, communities, business and citizens of the County to educate themselves on the environment, and become part of the solution to environmental needs. All activities and events held during the week are FREE and open to everyone to attend. This year there are close to 100 events from workshops, seminars, talks and information stands. Speaking at the launch, Mayor Holland said: “I am always amazed at the variety of activities offered during EcoWeek and this year is no exception. From “Landscape and nature Photography” workshops, to “Ecological Gardeners”, to “How WEEE works” to “An evening with Dick Warner”, they are all simply outstanding”.
This year EcoWeek is promoting and supporting the PURE (Protecting Uplands and Rural Environments) Project. The PURE Project helps keep the uplands tidy and provides a number of educational and awareness initiatives such as the PURE Mile, PURE animation, PURE music, short films on community/environmental initiatives and PURE WISDOM.
Sorcha O’Brien, Environmental Awareness Officer for South Dublin County Council said “EcoWeek aims to deliver an important message to everyone living and working in South Dublin County: that everyone can play a role in reducing their impact on the environment by changing their environmental behaviour in order to live in a more sustainable manner. “ Remember”, she says, its “Our Environment, let’s protect it!”
South Dublin County Council welcomes this opportunity to encourage citizens to keep an eye on www.sdcc.ie, Facebook and twitter for event updates, and to take part in as many initiatives as possible throughout the year. It is through working together that we can make South Dublin County the best possible place in which to live, work and do business.
