Flag Raising and Proclamation Ceremony 2016: Monday 11th April 2016, County Hall, Tallaght
On Monday 11th April, Mayor Sarah Holland welcomed councillors, citizens and special guests from the armed forces of the 7th Infantry Battalion, Cathal Brugha Barracks and Baldonnel Air Force along with representatives from An Garda Siochanna, Tallaght for a special flag raising ceremony in County Hall, Tallaght.
Speaking at the event Mayor Holland said “I am very honoured to welcome you all here to County Hall, Tallaght for our Flag Raising and Proclamation Ceremony as part of South Dublin County’s Centenary Programme. We are here today, to acknowledge the memory of all those who participated in the Easter Rising which took place this month, one hundred years ago”.
The proclamation was read aloud by Captain Collins, of the 7th Infantry Battalion, Cathal Brugha Barracks while a wreath was presented to Mayor Holland by Garda’s Gibbons and Loughney of Tallaght Garda Station. Followed by a lament and the national anthem which was played by Quarter Master Sergeant Whelan of Baldonnel Aerodrome.
At the ceremony a minutes silence was observed for those who fought and died for Irish freedom in 1916.
Adding colour and pizzazz to the occasion were members of Tus Nua, the Older Persons Ambassadors for South Dublin County who were dressed in period costume for the event, despite the Irish Weather.
