Launch of South Dublin County, 2016 Centenary Programme - Creative, Inspiring and Respectful

 On Wednesday 2nd December, 35 groups from across the county joined Mayor Sarah Holland at County Hall, Tallaght for the launch of South Dublin County Council’s 2016 Centenary Programme of Events.

The Ireland 2016 programme marks the centenary, with a yearlong programme of events in which everyone is invited to participate. A key strand of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme is that of Community Participation which is being led by local authorities across the country. The Council’s Commemorations Fund provides financial assistance to enable communities to adapt the National programme strands at local level. It is vital that individuals and community groups across South Dublin County have an opportunity to make a contribution to the commemorative programme for 2016. It is important that ideas and creativity are fostered across the spectrum of community life: from History and Heritage, sporting organisations, arts and cultural groups, voluntary organisations and youth groups.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Holland said “It is great to see so many people here for the launch of South Dublin County Council’s 2016 Centenary Programme of events. I would especially like to welcome to South Dublin County, members of the Ireland 2016 project team led by John Concannon and Michael Reilly. I think the attendance here tonight is a testament to how the Centenary Programme has really captured the imagination of the citizens of South Dublin County in preparing for and celebrating the birth of our nation”.

Commenting on the programme of events, Mayor Holland added “When I read through the programme, I was overwhelmed by the imagination, creativity and diversity of ideas submitted. Our wonderful South Dublin libraries will host a wide range of history based activities for all ages designed to deepen and broaden our understanding of this pivotal period in our history. In particular I was delighted to see a number of events which remember and honour the women who played a major part in the events of 1916”.

Chief Executive of South Dublin County Council, Daniel McLoughlin was delighted to announce that “At the centre of South Dublin’s centenary programme is a legacy project which proposes the development of a new pedestrian entrance and civic plaza located at the corner of St. Enda’s Park and the junction with Sarah Curran Avenue in Rathfarnham. The project is on display for public consultation in Ballyroan and Whitechurch Libraries and County Hall, Tallaght from 3rd December 2015 to 10th February 2016”
