South Dublin County Councils hosts ‘Annette Halpin Memorial Tea Dance’ as part of Social Inclusion Week 2015

As part of Social Inclusion Week, South Dublin County Council are hosting a Tea Dance for the Active Retired living throughout the county. The Tea Dance will take place from 3.00pm to 6.00pm on Thursday 19th November 2015 in the Red Cow Inn, Clondalkin and will be officially opened by Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Sarah Holland.

This Tea Dance brings together volunteers and members of groups from all over the county. Such was the overwhelming response for this event that already the tickets have been completely sold out.

The Tea Dance is named after the late Annette Halpin, former employee of South Dublin County Council. Annette played an integral role over the years in organising the Tea Dances for Social Inclusion Week.

At the time of the council’s establishment in 1994, the population of South Dublin County was approximately 208,000, today it stands at 265,174. The population of the county who are aged 65 and over is also increasing with figures set to rise over the next number of years. This ageing population offers both challenges and opportunities to the community.

South Dublin County Council is working in partnership with many local organisations and statutory agencies to enhance the services to elderly people living in the county. Tús Nua the Older Person’s Council for South Dublin is now established and is a working platform for discussion on social interaction and issues affecting Older Persons.

A great amount of work with the elderly population in the county is carried out by volunteers and this is greatly appreciated by the people that avail of the services and also by South Dublin County Council.

Why Social Inclusion Week?

The purpose of South Dublin County Social Inclusion Week is to highlight and promote the positive work that South Dublin County Council is involved in to reduce social exclusion and poverty. It is a programme of events organised by the Social Inclusion Unit, Community Services Department to highlight the diversity and creativity of people in South Dublin County. The Unit reaches out into all sections of community, connecting many people and groups who are normally isolated and on the margins. It is an opportunity for people to learn new skills, share ideas and participate in their community.
