South Dublin County Council awards Community Groups with Community Initiative Fund

South Dublin County Council invited all successful Community Groups who were awarded funds from the Council’s new Community Initiative Fund (CIF) to a special function held in the Council Chamber in County Hall last Thursday afternoon.

The Community Initiative Fund (CIF), a fund of €170,000 was launched earlier in the year and offered all Community Groups in the County the opportunity to apply for funding towards the establishment of new and innovative projects, providing significant community and/or cultural/heritage enhancement within their local areas.

The Fund received a tremendous response, with receipt of 118 applications totalling a cumulative funding request in excess for €1.3 Million and after a process of shortlisting and independent assessment a final list of 21 successful Groups were selected for the awarding of funds.

The successful projects were wide ranging, ranging from improving services for children and young people, to environmental conservation projects, to projects supporting actions to improve access and promote inclusion; to other projects focusing in the promotion arts, culture and heritage.

The Mayor Councillor Sarah Holland met and congratulated the successful groups and thanked them for all their efforts and work within the communities and in particular highlighted their volunteerism as an example of what locals do that is so beneficial to participation and social inclusion.

Cllr Dermot Looney, Chairperson of the Social and Community Strategic Policy Committee within the Council stated:

"This funding will provide a real boost to projects rooted in communities across South Dublin County. The breadth of activities and groups being awarded shows the strength of community spirit in our area. I want to thank the members of the Social and Community SPC, the Community staff in South Dublin County Council, and all Councillors for supporting this new fund. I am hopeful that next year's Council budget will provide for an expanded Community Initiative Fund, so that more groups can be supported in their work in our communities."
