History Ireland bring popular Hedge School to Tallaght
Since the publication in 1977 of her ‘revisionist’ biography of Patrick Pearse, Ruth Dudley Edwards has changed opinions about the leader ofthe 1916 rising. Was he a hero or a fanatic or perhaps both? All shades of the argument will be aired at The Civic Theatre on Thursday 15th of October when as part of the Red Line Book Festival, History Ireland Magazine bring their popular Hedge School to Tallaght.
History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham has assembled a stellar panel of historians to discuss the question:
Patrick Pearse: proto-fascist eccentric or visionary?
Tommy will be joined by:
Dr. Joost Augusteijn, University of Leiden, the Netehrlands, author of Patrick Pearse, The Making of a Revolutionary, Palgrave Macmillan, 2010.
Dr. Ruth Dudley Edwards, academic, broadcaster and writer. Her Patrick Pearse: The Triumph of Failure (winner of the National University of Ireland Prize for Historical Research), first published in 1977, was reissued in 2006 by Irish Academic Press.
Dr. John Gibney who has published a number of books on Irish history including 16 Lives: Seán Heuston (O’Brien Press, 2013),and The Easter Rising in 50 objects (Mercier, forthcoming).
Dr. Róisin Higgins whose publications include, Transforming 1916: meaning, memory and the fiftieth anniversary of the Easter Rising, which won the 2012 ACIS James S.Donnelly Sr Prize for the best book in History and Social Science. Publications also include The Life and After-Life of P.H. Pearse/ Pádraic Mac Piarais: Saol agus Oidhreacht (eds.) with Regina Uí Chollatáin, (Dublin: Irish Academic Press,2009).
With such an expert panel it promises to be an interesting and perhaps lively debate. There will be an opportunity for contributions from
the audience so come along and have your say. All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the current issue of History Ireland and a History Ireland book bag.
