An Taisce National Green Schools Awards
An Taisce’s National Green Schools Awards were held in the Helix, DCU on Thursday 21st May 2015. This year 31 schools from the South Dublin County Council’s administrative area received a Green Flag.
Green Schools is an international environmental education programme and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long term, whole school action for the environment.
Aisling Stafford, South Dublin County Council, congratulated all the schools “The students take their job very seriously, and quite right too. Because of your commitment, you make a very real contribution to protecting the environment in South Dublin County, and protecting our planet for the future. Each time a young person makes a decision to walk to school, pick up litter, recycle, save water, energy or take care of our native plants and wildlife, it has a positive impact on our environment.”
“I love the green schools programme because it empowers our young people when they realize that the things they do can make a difference, from leaky detectives to bright sparks to bin wardens who actively monitor the progress of students and teachers in the school.”
“On behalf of South Dublin County Council I would like to sincerely thank all 31 schools for the contributions you have made in caring for the environment of our County and we look forward to working with you all in the future.”
To date there are a total of 77 Primary Schools and 19 secondary schools in South Dublin County, have been awarded the Green Flag from An Taisce, respectively.
Unlike a once-off project, the Green Schools Programme introduces participants (students, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the concept of an environmental management system. However, Green-Schools is far more than just an environmental management system. It fosters a strong sense of citizenship and leadership among participants that spreads far outside the school into the wider community. It also promotes a strong sense of teamwork among stakeholders to reach a common high level goal. It flattens and democratises school management structures. It brings children into the decision-making process and makes them responsible for their decisions and actions.
