The Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Fintan Warfield formally opened the Knockmitten Playspace on the 29th April with second class students from Gael Scoil na Camoige as part of South Dublin County Council’s Playground Construction Programme 2014 – 2019.
This project involved the creation of an innovative play space for use by toddlers and children up to 8 years old. The new play area has been designed using wooden play equipment that will be in keeping with the natural feel of the site and will provide a variety of different play experiences for both toddlers and older children. In addition to the new play area, the project involved the renovation of an existing community garden. Mayor Warfield speaking at the official opening said “The design of the garden using natural materials enhances the natural beauty of the landscape. This encourages our citizens to appreciate the way in which our natural materials can be used to create innovative places like this one. The process of creating this garden has been as much a community development exercise as a landscaping project and credit must be given to all those involved”.
This innovative idea is not just a playspace; the space also includes a number of beautiful features suitable for older members of the community to relax. The garden features ornamental planting, water features and a grandparent swing seat. The area also has an outdoor kitchen complete with Pizza oven and BBQ which allows for community groups to gather and use these outdoor facilities.
