New Orienteering courses opens in Tymon Park

South Dublin County Sports Partnership, in conjunction with South Dublin County Council and Ajax Orienteering Club, has installed new permanent orienteering courses in Tymon Park.

Orienteering is a sport that requires navigational skills using a map to navigate from point to point to find marked control points. It can be timed and done competitively but also offers those who are less sporty or competitive the opportunity to learn, have fun and be active.

There are a total of 5 courses mapped out in the park - a short and medium course on each side of the M50, and a long course that takes in both sides of the park. The courses are suitable for use by schools, youth clubs, community groups, families and the general public and offer a great way of discovering and enjoying Tymon Park, for free.

The installation of the courses marks the completion of a network of orienteering courses in South Dublin County Council’s regional parks including Corkagh Park and Griffeen Valley Park. There is also a course marked out at Massey’s Estate beside the Hell Fire Club in the Dublin Mountains. All the courses are free to use and maps can be downloaded from the Sports Partnership’s website http://www.sdcsp.ie/information/community-general/279-orienteering

Speaking at the launch of the Tymon Park courses, in the presence of pupils from Scoil Aonghusa NS who were participating on a free taster session organised as part of Active Schools Week by the Sports Partnership, Mayor Fintan Warfield commended all the parties who had brought this great new addition to the park.

South Dublin County Council is committed to making Tymon Park a fantastic regional park with a wide range of sports and activities that serves all members of our community – GAA, soccer, rugby, athletics, rounders, softball cricket, outdoor exercise equipment and the playgrounds, to name some. Having these free orienteering courses will add another level to that great community service and should even bring new visitors to the park from other areas. I would like to commend the Sports Partnership and Ajax Orienteering Club for their work in devising and developing the course and helping the Council make it a park that the people love coming to. One of the main goals of the Council is to promote the physical and mental health of our community and this orienteering course ticks the box in every respect for that.”

…And with that his chain of office came off and he joined in with the children and their teachers on discovering new corners of the park.
