Scoil Iosa National School, Tymon North
RAISES ITS GREEN FLAG FOR LITTER & WASTE
26th June 2012
There were smiles all round as pupils, staff and parents at Scoil Iosa National School Tymon North raised their first Green Flag for Waste and Litter on Tuesday 26th June 2012. Councillor Mick Duff raised the flag and congratulated everyone at Scoil Iosa.
The school was awarded the green flag after demonstrating they had implemented the seven steps of An Taisce’s Green Schools Programme. They drastically reduced the amount of waste produced by the whole school. This was achieved by managing waste in a more environmentally friendly ways such as composting organic waste, recycling and reducing lunch waste.
This great achievement was realised by every ones hard work and dedication. The school managed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by 45%. They introduced waste free lunch every Tuesday, Bin Inspectors and Litter Wardens patrolled the school and they increased their recycling of paper, batteries and mobile phones.
Scoil Iosa elected a Green Schools Committee and developed a comprehensive Action Plan which included anti litter poster competitions, a visit to South Dublin County Council’s Civic Amenity Centre, a Day of Action in November 2011, a Litter Buster Mural Project and much much more.
The Irish Green-Schools programme is one of the most successful within the international network. One of the main factors in the success of the Irish Green-Schools programme is the partnership between the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Local Authorities.
