St Brigid’s JNS Brookfield
RAISES ITS GREEN FLAG FOR LITTER & WASTE

There were smiles all round as pupils, staff and parents at St Brigid’s JNS Brookfield raised their first Green Flag for Waste and Litter on Friday 22nd June 2012. Mayor of South Dublin County Councillor Catriona Jones attended the flag raising ceremony and she congratulated all at St Brigid’s JNS
The school was awarded the green flag after demonstrating they had implemented the seven steps of An Taisce’s Green Schools Programme. They drastically reduced the amount of waste for the whole school. This was achieved by managing waste in a more environmentally friendly such as composting organic waste, recycling and reducing lunch waste.
The Mayor congratulated all at the school saying “I know that when St. Brigid’s J.N.S. starting recycling they were sending 45 black bags of rubbish to landfill every week and now, we have barely one black bag per week from the entire school! That is an amazing achievementâ€
Mayor Jones continued by saying“ I also heard that St Brigid’s JNS took part in an anti-litter and anti-graffiti project run in the community this year together with the Brookfield Youth and Community Centre, Dodder Valley Partnership, Foróige, and parents and pupils of other local schools. Your actions are setting an example to other schools, to your families and to the wider community. You are demonstrating that simple actions can bring about big change and help improve and protect our environment. “
The Irish Green-Schools programme is one of the most successful within the international network. One of the main factors in the success of the Irish Green-Schools programme is the partnership between the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Local Authorities.
