MAYOR CAITRIONA JONES LAUNCHES NATIONAL ACCESSIBILITY WEEK 2011 IN SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY

Today Monday 28th November 2011 Mayor Caitríiona Jones will officially launch a week long programme of activities organised to highlight National Accessibility Week in South Dublin County.

Local Authority National Accessibility Week 2011 is taking place from 28th November to 5th December 2011. The week-long campaign will coincide with International Day of Disabled Persons which is taking place on 3rd December 2011. The theme of the Week 2011 is ‘Park Right’. Parking illegally on the footpath effectively forces disabled people, parents with pushchairs, older people and all pedestrians onto the roadway and into traffic.

Local Authorities all over the country will be engaging in activities that encourage citizens to focus on illegal and inconsiderate parking, poor parking behaviour and the difficulties and access issues that are caused by parking on footpaths, blocking entrances etc. There will also be general promotion of accessibility nationwide.

The week is being co-ordinated and supported by the Local Authority Access Officer Network and the LGMSB National Disability Steering Committee.

South Dublin County Council will be promoting accessibility during the Week through:

Poster Campaign: The ‘Park Right’ posters (available for download from http://accessible.southdublin.ie) will be on display in public buildings, schools and community facilities across the County.

Libraries: At South Dublin Library Services there will be staff on hand to highlight the range of accessible services available to citizens. These include the TTTRS (Touch, Type, Read and Spell) software programme which is delivered by Library staff to children and adults, in a group or one to one, who experience learning and reading difficulties. Please contact the County Library at 01-4620073 for further information about this programme.

Planning and Accessibility Display:

There will be a display on Planning and Accessibility available throughout the Week in the County Hall Concourse. This will include information on the Disability Access Certification process.
