South Dublin County Libraries brings you
TEDxTallaght 2011
Thinking Made Visual
Thursday 3rd November at 7pm
Venue: Victory Centre, Firhouse, Dublin 24
Libraries have always been places where ideas are shared and disseminated and as such South Dublin Libraries have been following TED discussions for some time. TEDx licenses are granted to local groups and South Dublin Libraries are delighted to get one of these licenses.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
As 2011 is The Year of Craft, the theme for TEDxTallaght is Thinking Made Visual – how passionate people and inspired thinkers take dreams and creativity and convert them into a reality that shapes all of our lives; forming new and even more innovative horizons.
New ideas, new associations, new initiatives from very diverse contemporary creative thinkers will be presented at TEDxTallaght. Speakers from various backgrounds will tell their stories with passion and enthusiasm about how they are working to make the ordinary extraordinary. This blend of thinkers and curious people will inspire and challenge their listeners.
TEDxTallaght: The Speakers
The speakers for TEDxTallaght are hand picked for their inspired thinking and world
acclaimed accomplishments. In the TED tradition, each speaker is challenged to give "the talk of his/her life" in 18 minutes or less. Joining us on 3rd November will be:
Roísín Heneghan of Heneghan Peng Architects, a design partnership practising architecture, landscape and urban design. The practise was founded by Shih-Fu Peng and Róisín Heneghan in New York in 1999 and in 2001 was relocated to Dublin, Ireland.
They take a multi-disciplinary approach to design and have collaborated with many leading designers and engineers on a range of projects which include larger scale urban masterplans, bridges, landscapes and buildings.
Current projects include the Grand Egyptian Museum at the Pyramids in Cairo, the Giant’s Causeway Visitors’ Centre, Central Park Bridges at the 2012 London Olympic Park, a Library and School of Architecture at the University of Greenwich in Greenwich, London and a Mittelrheinbruecke in the Rhine Valley.
Angela O’ Kelly is a designer who crosses boundaries of jewellery, textiles and sculpture. She combines paper with mixed media using a variety of traditional and non-traditional textile and jewellery techniques. Inspiration derives from a fascination with simple shapes, textures, repetition and colour in urban and rural landscapes.
O’Kelly has exhibited extensively in international exhibitions and galleries. Her work can be seen in many private collections and the public collections of the National Museum of Ireland, the British Crafts Council, London; the Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh; the Museum of Art and Design, New York; the Cleveland Arts Centre International Jewellery Collection, UK; and the Office of Public Works, Dublin.
Dr. Conor MacCormack, MCor Technologies – world leaders in 3D Printing.: Mcor Technologies was formed by brothers Dr Conor MacCormack and Fintan MacCormack in a bid to democratise ‘innovation’, by creating a set of accessible tools that would provide the freedom to innovate in an unlimited way. This journey started in 2005 with the vision of a future where everyone can easily turn their ideas into low-costing, eco-friendly 3D objects. Providing accessibility to a once niche technology is the driving force behind the company at present; with the Matrix range of 3D printers the result of this vision. Mcor’s mission with the Matrix is to bring 3D printing to the masses and to make 3D printing as easy as printing on paper.
Hilary Kenna of IADT: Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. She has worked with Touch Press as the designer of their latest iPad App, The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot, published jointly with Faber and Faber. Hilary Kenna will speak about Data Visualisation and new technologies, where creativity becomes reality and what that future reality might be.
