Official opening of new cycling and pedestrian facilities on Stocking Lane, Rathfarnham
The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Caitriona Jones, officially opened the new cycle track and pedestrian facilities on Stocking Lane, Rathfarnham today to mark the official launch of European Mobility Week 2011.
The Mayor indicated that the Council was delighted to be taking part in the 10th anniversary of European Mobility Week where this year’s theme is “Alternative Mobilityâ€. She said “That the infrastructure which has been provided here and which was funded via a Specific Improvement Grant by the National Roads Authority, certainly meets the objective of this year’s eventâ€.
In commenting on the wish of the EU to support the transition towards a resource-efficient transport system, she noted that that work was still required on promoting to all sectors of the community in South Dublin the need for greater use of clean, fuel efficient travel modes and human-powered transport. She invited all local residents to take up the challenge and use the new track for cycling or walking.
She said “That at over 800m long and 3.0m wide, the cycle track and footpath, and improvement of the Bus Stops provided opportunities to all sectors of the local community as the new infrastructure was very suited to those who had mobility difficultiesâ€.
The Mayor concluded her remarks by inviting everyone to take part in activities during European Mobility Week and doing their bit for the environment.
