South Dublin County Libraries and ITT Dublin brings you

My School has MathsEyes 2011

22nd June

Venue: ITT Tallaght, Dublin 24

The exhibition will be launched by John Murray at 12 noon and can be viewed from 10am to 4.30 until June 29th. John will also present the awards to all participating schools and to the prize-winners from each school.

Have you seen the MathsEyes posters all around the Tallaght area?

Do you know that GAA and Rugby supporters use algebra when they work out the score of a game or that Tallaght Square is not a square at all and that Math’s underpins all of the science and the technology (even Moshi Monsters!) that run our lives?

Do you know how many litres of water it would take to fill Tallaght Stadium? - or how much water you can save if you fix a leaking tap?

It takes about enough water to fill 25 Olympic Swimming pools to fill Tallaght Stadium, but this amount of water would not keep all the homes in Tallaght with water for even 1 day.

A tiny drip of water from 1 leaking tap wastes ten thousand litres of water in a year. We drink about 2 litres of water every day so it would take about 14 years for 1 person to drink this amount of water.

500 children attending 11 primary schools in the Tallaght area will tomorrow exhibit their work on MathsEyes in the ITT, Dublin. The children, ranging in ages from 5 to 12, have spent the last few weeks looking at their surroundings from a maths viewpoint and putting together projects and displays for the exhibition.

Tomorrow is their day; a chance to prove to you that we all have Maths Eyes; we just need to open them.

Looking at Tallaght through Maths Eyes is a community initiative with a number of organisations working together to develop the maths eyes of the community in Tallaght so that everyone can appreciate the millions of ways we use maths every day.
