Mayor Marie Corr will launch Bealtaine in Clondalkin Leisure Centre on May 3rd at 11am. Why not Push the Boat Out, whatever the sea…..
The launch will be followed by a ‘Come and Try it Day’ a day where Over 55’s can try something new, a variety of physical activities for older adults.
May belongs to the Bealtaine festival, celebrating creativity in older age! Thousands of older people now take part in the Bealtaine festival, with 2011 being its 16th year. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists.
It is a chance for people to make new and challenging work, a chance to communicate traditions between the generations. It is a chance for the novice to discover a talent until then unseen and a chance for a long-dormant skill to find a new outlet.
South Dublin County Council has worked in partnership with many local organisations and statutory agencies to enhance the services for older people living in the county. Working together we can make South Dublin County a great place to live for people of all ages and abilities.
Each year, Age & Opportunity invites local authorities, arts centres, libraries, Active Retirement groups, care settings, community groups and clubs, associations from every part of the country to run Bealtaine events that celebrate creativity in older age. Bealtaine is part-funded by the Arts Council and delivered by hundreds of organisations around the Country.
A theme is devised to get people thinking and a festival programme produced: which lists events and showcases the diverse range of activities taking place. The theme for this year, 2011 is ‘Push the boat out, whatever the sea’.
Age & Opportunity instigates or supports a number of events each year, for people to try something new.
South Dublin County Council have organised a number of events during the month to celebrate this festival. We have also produced a brochure to advertise the events for older people during Bealtaine. Brochures are available in County Hall, your local Library or Community Centre. They can also be downloaded at http://socialinclusion.southdublin.ie/
Why not: ‘Push the Boat Out, Whatever the Sea’ and try something new on the day and during the month of May.
All are welcome to come along and try something new. Tea / Coffee and Light Refreshments will be served.
