Press Release: South Dublin County Sports Partnership Launches Strategic Plan
24th November 2010 South Dublin County Sports Partnership (SDCSP) has just launched their first strategic plan for promotion of sport and physical recreation in the county for the period 2010-2016. SDCSP is a local partnership of public agencies, sports organizations, school and community representatives and the Chamber of Commerce, formed with financial support from the Irish Sports Council (ISC).
The plan is aimed at those who have a role in the provision of services and amenities for sport and recreational activity; those who have a role in providing education, coaching support or volunteer support to groups or individuals in the community and anyone who has an interest in the promotion and support of physical activity.
Consultation sessions took place with a wide number of agencies and community groups representative of all sectors of society. Realising the truth of the motto “A good start is half the work” the core target group for the plan is children and youth but other groups, such as those who are not currently active enough but are open to trying new activities, will be targeted. Of particular interest also will be the inclusion of groups where evidence shows that they participate less in sport or physical recreation. These include teenage girls and women in general, people with disabilities, older aged, ethnic minorities and the unemployed.
The plan lays out actions that are to be undertaken to achieve goals such as improving the provision of information; maximising the usage of the facilities available in the county; training coaches, teachers and community leaders and reaching target groups.
Speaking at the launch, CEO of the ISC, John Treacy, complimented the Sports Partnership on its progress to this point and said that the launch of this plan will be of great benefit to the organisation in the coming years. He particularly complimented the work of South Dublin County Council for their enormous contribution to the recreational facilities in the area and the efforts of their Sports, Parks and Community Services Departments. “As a native today of South Dublin County I can see the positive changes that have already occurred with the provision of facilities and services over the last number of years. In the coming years the fact that such strong investment has been made in facilities and partnership development leads me to believe that despite fears about the levels of funding available the future will continue to be bright for the county and its citizens”.
