App-ovation: mobile phone application competition for second level schools

South Dublin County Council’s Mayor Eamonn Maloney launches app-ovation in RUARED Arts Centre on Monday 15th November during the 2010 Innovation Dublin Festival. App-ovation is a collaboration between ITT Dublin, Vodafone and South Dublin County Council.

The students in the ITT Computing School will develop the app for launch on the market.  Partners ITT, Vodafone and South Dublin County Council will foster the development of students through workshops to be held in the state of the art multimedia room in RUARED Art Centre touching on creative thinking, technology, development and marketing.

The Mayor Eamonn Maloney said “Mobile technology and apps are the way of the future. 21st Century teenagers are usually physically attached to their mobile phones. Mobiles are critical tools for the Google generation for social networking, communication and information sourcing.  Today phone apps are big business with new apps coming on-stream daily. We are delighted that students from South Dublin County have an opportunity to engage with these new technologies”.

Dr Barry Feeney, Head of Computing Department at IT Tallaght said “we are delighted to be involved with this initiative where students at 2nd level come up with an idea for a mobile phone app and the skills and expertise of the students and staff at IT Tallaght are used in the development of the app. The partnership with South Dublin County Council and Vodafone enriches the project as the students get support in the development of the concept and in delivering a result. This is a vital part of learning.
