Mayor Eamonn Maloney in the presence of Mr. Pat Carey T.D., Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs will officially launch South Dublin County Council Social Inclusion Awareness Week on Monday 8th November 2010 at 12.00 pm in County Hall, Tallaght. South Dublin County Council is working to minimise disadvantage and improve the quality of life for all residents in the County.

The aim of this week is to highlight the positive work carried out by South Dublin County Council and other agencies to reduce social exclusion and poverty, and to promote an understanding of social inclusion and diversity in the County.

Social Inclusion is the process which ensures that those at risk of poverty and social exclusion gain the opportunities and resources necessary to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live. (Joint Report by the Commission and the Council on Social Inclusion, Office for Official Publications of the European Union). South Dublin County Council plays a key role in the direct delivery of social inclusion actions, programmes and supports to the communities.

2010 is the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.  The European Year aims to raise public awareness of poverty and social exclusion and to convey the message that they are obstacles to social and economic development. Social Inclusion Week provides us with the platform to highlight social inclusion initiatives and promote active citizenship. Social Inclusion is about creating a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in all aspects of life.  Social Inclusion is “Everyone’s Business”.

During the week there will be a varied programme of events, including a ½ Day Unemployment Seminar in Tallaght Stadium, the T Factor Talent Show in the Civic Theatre, a Tea Dance for older people in the Red Cow Inn Clondalkin, Art Classes for People with Disabilities in County Library Tallaght, the screening of A Bit of the Other in County Library, the launch of the DVD Voices of South Dublin, Cookery Classes (how to cook on a budget), Volunteer Fair Day, Digi Art Classes and much more. A detailed schedule for the Week has been developed and is available on our website:
