Rhyme and Rhythm, South Dublin Libraries’ themed Children’s Book Festival begins on Monday 4th October. The festival will run until Friday 22nd October with plenty of fun events for all age groups, for both schools and the public.

South Dublin Libraries’ Children’s Book Festival will be officially launched by Mayor Cllr Eamonn Maloney on Monday 4th October at Ballyroan Library, Orchardstown Avenue, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16

Guest of honour at the launch will be Northern Ireland’s most celebrated folk theatre ensemble, The Armagh Rhymers – who have delighted audiences all over the world with their unique blend of music, drama, song and dance. The masked tradition of 'mumming' in Ulster dates back 2500 years. In the ancient annals of Ulster, men in tall conical masks are mentioned as chief entertainers to King Conor, who lived at the royal fort of Emain Macha. This tradition finds voice in the work of the Armagh Rhymers, who incorporate the old and the new in a variety of different shows that are suitable for all age groups.

The theme of Rhyme and Rhythm takes in the world of Children’s Literature from comic verse to fantasy and everything in between. Morning performances are reserved for school visits and visiting authors include the cream of the crop:  John Boyne; Oisin McGann; Jane Mitchell; Ré O’Leighleas; Maddie Stewart; illustrator Niamh Sharkey and lots more. We are also delighted to welcome Maggie Stiefvater from the US. Visiting poets include Stephen James Smith and Alan Murphy, while Colin Kenny’s Mobile Music Workshops will introduce the younger tots to the world of music.

There is also a lovely series of afternoon events for all ages from tots to teens.  For those who like to get creative, workshops include Creative Writing with author Rose Doyle; the Imagination Gym; Princess and Pirates arts and crafts; Halloween arts and crafts. An interesting addition to the programme is a workshop for Young Collectors given by staff from the National Library of Ireland.

Story lovers will enjoy the renowned Niall de Burca, and an event for all ages is The Town with no Stories Puppet Show which is making a visit to a South Dublin County library near you!

Prepare to be entertained! (You may need to book for some of these events)

Festival competitions are open to everyone.  There is a colouring competition for Under 6’s and a Limerick competition with three different age categories beginning at 5 years old. Great prizes to be won, sponsored by Leisureplex Tallaght
