Press Release
South Dublin Libraries is delighted to present an exhibition Sweet Memories: The Story of Urney Chocolates at the County Library, Tallaght from Monday 23rd August until Saturday 19th September.
In 1950s Ireland, Urney Chocolates was a household name. A favourite for any sweet tooth was the Urney Two and Two Bar. A unique creation with a double fondant filling, coated with plain chocolate on top and milk chocolate on the bottom. Each of the nine cream-filled squares were embossed with the legendary Urney leprechaun.
Originally located in County Tyrone, Urney Chocolates moved to the disused RAF airfield on the Belgard Road in Tallaght in 1923 where the business prospered for over sixty years.
Karen Nolan, a graphic designer and illustrator living in County Wexford (and great grand daughter of the founders of Urney Chocolates), has researched and curated the exhibition. Her research will be published in a new book, also called Sweet Memories: The Story of Urney Chocolates, which will be launched, along with the exhibition, at the County Library on Thursday 26th August at 7:00 p.m. In addition, an oral history project undertaken by South Dublin Libraries, whereby the stories and memories of ex-Urney employees were recorded will also be launched on the night.
The exhibition will include lots of memorabilia, including original Urney Chocolates and even former Urney Managing Director Redmond Gallagher’s racing car. It’s sure to bring back plenty of memories!
The exhibition runs at the County Library, Tallaght, from Monday 23rd August to Saturday 19th September and all are welcome. Library opening hours are Monday – Friday 9:45 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 9:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
