Mayor Eamonn Maloney presents the Arts Bursary Awards to recipients in County Hall Tallaght on Tuesday 13th July.

South Dublin County Council annually awards bursaries to artists who live or work in the county, to support a significant development in their career, through innovation, education, travel, and project development. In 2010 awards have been made in the categories of music, literature, and visual arts.

There were three categories of Awards;the Individual Artist Bursary Awards; the Project Award for Amateur, Voluntary and Community Organisations and a new award introduced in 2010, the Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians.

The Project Award aims to support amateur, voluntary or community bodies involved in organising a particular art form project that in the opinion of the Council would:

  • stimulate public interest in the arts
  • promote the knowledge, appreciation and practice of the arts
  • or assist in improving the standards of the arts across the County.

The Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians is a new category for this year. Annette Halpin was a community worker with SDCC and a talented musician/composer. She died on 14th April 2009 and a memorial concert was held in the Civic Theatre, with artists performing all of her own compositions. The proceeds from this concert, was €3,000 was awarded to young (up to 30 years of age), musicians/composers/singers, in the county, with a view to support their professional development or to further enhance their career within music. This might include master classes, purchase of instruments, recording, or travel.

Bursary Award Winners

David Mohan (€ 2000), Poet and Short Story Writer – to research and develop new writing, to support readings in venues and festivals and to travel to London to develop a presence in Britain.

Patricia Baker (€2000)), visual and multimedia artist – to develop a radio based project titled Curious Broadcast that will explore the use of temporary radio broadcasts and webcasts for arts and cultural dialogue across sectors.

Shane O Fearghail (€2000), Singer/songwriter – To write and record an album of traditional style songs titled Born From tradition.

Brian Duggan (€2000), visual artist – to enable the artist to develop a new strand to his artistic practise, to buy new equipment, and to part fund a new publication

Maria Doyle Kennedy (€2000), Musician and Singer – To complete a project called SING which marries the rhythms and tunings of Spain with the traditional instrumentation of Ireland of Ireland in new and original songwriting.

Project Award Winner

Le Chéile (€3000), awarded funding to support music tuition for young people participating in this music education project in St. Aidan’s Community School, Brookfield.

Sounds Ensemble (€1240), to purchase new music for the group and to have the instruments cleaned.

Clondalkin Youth Theatre (€760), to enable it to stage a new play devised by the group.

The Annette Halpin Memorial Young Musician Award

Carla White (€1125) and Phoebe White (€1125) to participate in violin masterclasses in France during the summer of 2010.

Triple Drop (€760), to enable the recording and the promotion of the music of this emerging band.
