GREEN FLAG RAISING CEREMONY – 17th June 2010 at 1.00pm

Mayor Mick Duff was on hand at Scoil Maelruan, Senior National School to celebrate the achievement of their 6th Green Flag for the Green Home Programme; Scoil Maelruan is one of the leading Green Schools not only in South Dublin County but in Ireland with this achievement under their belt. The Green Schools Programme in this school is a huge success and a way of life, the committee and the pupils are dedicated to litter picking, recycling, re-using and resource conversation.

Commenting on the occasion the Mayor said “People passing by this school are very impressed to see all your green flags flying and this sends a strong message that the pupils and staff at this school really do care about the environment. The flags are symbols of all your hard work to make your school, your homes and the County a cleaner and greener place”.

Activities at Scoil Maelruan are improving and enhancing the environment – activities such as walking or cycling to school, recycling waste, keeping the school litter free and saving water and energy. Praise was also given to Ms. Mc Hugh for her hard work and dedication in co-coordinating the Green Schools Programme with great support from Ms. Murphy, Ms. Walsh, Bernard the Caretaker and the Principal Mr. Corcoran.

The Mayor was also at the school to celebrate National Bike Week, which is all about encouraging people to use this fun and environmentally friendly method of transport.

The Mayor expressed thanks to Barbara Connolly and all her helpers from South Dublin County Council, who were on hand to provide students with innovative cycle training methods and to encourage this very worthwhile pursuit. The Mayor also acknowledged the contribution of the teachers in St. Maelruan’s Senior School who recognize the importance on instilling safety training and green awareness on children for future generations.
