Launch of National Bike Week - 14th June 2010 Press Release
Mayor Mick Duff on behalf of South Dublin County Council today launched South Dublin County Council’s 2010 National Bike Week in County Hall, Tallaght. National Bike Week is a week long program promoted by the Department of Transport as part of the “Smarter Travel Initiative” to get us all up and cycling.
Throughout the week there will be something for everyone - promotions, cycling events, lectures, nature tours in Parks, quizzes and cycling competitions scheduled to take place all around the County.
Commenting on the event the Mayor said “A number of events that captured my imagination including National Bike Day encouraging people to cycle to work” “Also on Friday 18th I will be honored to open the first Green Route in the County along the Grand Canal stretching from the 3rd Lock in Inchicore – a place I know well out as far as the 12th Lock in Lucan This is a collaboration between the ESB Networks, South Dublin County Council, Dublin City Council and Waterways Ireland”
Other events taking place include;
Bicycle Maintenance Classes on Tuesday 15th June 2010. The Classes will cover basic topics including how to change a tube, which parts of the bike need to be cleaned and how!
Bike Mounted Nature Tour of Griffeen Park Three local, Irish Language primary schools, St. Thomas Junior NS, Griffeen Valley Educate Together School and Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada, are taking part in an hour long cycling nature tour of Griffeen Valley Park.
Cycling Ireland Palmerston Community Festival Waterstown Park, Palmerston (beside Stewarts Sports and Leisure Centre) will host a Family Cycle Day on Sunday June 20th. The event will also form part of Palmerston Community Festival. Events kick off at 11.30 with a Cycling Ireland Race. At 1 o’clock there will be a family cycle around the cycle paths in the park and there will be plenty of entertainment for all the family. We encourage people to come along and bring their bicycles. Other attractions include face painters and bicycle demonstrations.
