IMPRESSIVE GREEN FLAG FOR SCOIL AONGHUSA JNS, TALLAGHT

15TH JUNE 2010 AT 9.30AM.

Scoil Aonghusa Junior National School Tallaght celebrated the raising of their second green flag for Energy   on Tuesday 15th June at 9.30am.The flag was raised by Mayor of South Dublin County Councillor Mick Duff. Mayor Duff congratulated the staff and pupils for their hard work and dedication in protecting and improving  their environment saying “ The Green Schools Programme is working very well in this school. Litter patrols and recycling activities are running smoothly while the energy theme has been embraced by all. The committee is doing a wonderful job in spreading the energy conservation message and the school garden is also a great achievement as are the links with lots of groups outside of the school to help them with the Green Schools Programme e.g. FAS, ICA, Parks Dept of SDCC etc. The support of all the teachers is essential and in this school it is evident and to be commended’.

60 schools in South Dublin County now fly the Green Flag. Recent research by An Taisce on the economic value of the Green-Schools programme to schools in Ireland has revealed that the programme has saved schools in Ireland a minimum €2 million in waste, electricity, water and fuel costs this year. The results reveal a minimum of 12 tonnes of waste diverted from landfills in Ireland every school day by schools undertaking the programme. Because the programme also involves the wider community the overall savings to the wider community could be several times the €2 million saved by the schools involved.

Over 3,100 primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland are currently taking part in the programme and 1,465 have been awarded the Green Flag. Scoil Aonghusa are already setting their sights on the Water Flag and have applied for Summer Works to upgrade taps and cisterns in the school.
