It was a proud day for students and staff at Killinarden Community School as Mayor of South Dublin County Councillor Mick Duff raised their first Green Flag for Waste and Litter on Wednesday 19th May.
The school was awarded the green flag after demonstrating they had implemented the seven steps of An Taisce’s Green Schools Programme. The whole school was involved in reducing waste to landfill, increasing recycling and tackling litter in the school.
The Mayor congratulated all at the school saying “Taking part in the Green Schools Programme involves a lot of hard work and is a big commitment for secondary schools. South Dublin County has 35 Secondary Schools however only 7, including Killinarden Community School, have been awarded the green flag. Your actions here are setting an example to other secondary schools, to your families and to the wider community. You are demonstrating that simple actions can bring about big change and help improve and protect our environment”.
To date 60 schools in South Dublin County fly the Green Flag. Nationally over 3,100 primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland are currently taking part in the programme and 1,465 have been awarded the Green Flag.
